Jayvell Washington, 39, of Bridgeport was arrested around 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, just hours after the man was found shot to death in front of a Citgo gas station around 9 a.m. Sunday at 915 Reservoir Ave., Bridgeport, said Terron Jones, spokesman for the Bridgeport Police Department.
Detectives processed a crime scene at this location, including the recovery of a handgun that the victim possessed at the time of his death, Jones said.
Washington was quickly developed as a suspect and he was taken into custody in front of 312 Fairview Ave. after he was dropped off by two other males in a rental car, Jones said.
Washington was charged with murder and bond is set at $1,000,000 pending arraignment in court Monday.
The identity of the victim will be released at a later date pending an autopsy.
This is the city’s second homicide of the year. The first was two weeks ago when Razzie Hancock, 39, of Bridgeport, was stabbed.
The shooting was the second over the weekend. On Saturday, Eric Salters, 28, of New Haven, was shot at the New England Tractor Trailor Training School (NETTTS) at 510 Barnum Ave., Jones said.
Salters is a student of the school and the evidence indicates that when he went to his car during class, he was confronted by a lone gunman, who opened fire on him without provocation. Salters was struck multiple times, including once in the head.
He was taken to Bridgeport Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. He is currently in critical condition. The motive for the attack remains unclear.
